About this project

In the 2021 Long-term Plan, we agreed to invest in alternate sewage sludge disposal technologies to break the link between the landfill and sewage.

The new facility will reduce volumes of sludge being disposed of at the Southern Landfill by more than 80%. This will enable Wellington to get on with reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.

A preferred option - a thermal hydrolysis, digestion and thermal drying plant located at Moa Point - has been identified. The business case for this option was approved in June 2022.

What the Notice of Requirement covers

The alteration to the Designation (Notice of Requirement) will provide for the design and build of the new facility, any activities that happen during construction and operation, and for ongoing use and maintenance of the facility.

Regional consents are also required from Greater Wellington Regional Council which, at this stage, are not part of this public process.
