Salford Street Play Area design update

21 August 2024

Kia ora koutou,

Thank you for your patience as we worked towards a final design for the Salford St play area, based on the predominant themes that came through public consultation. Concept 2 was the favourite between the two designs presented.

We had a good number of submitters at 95, with 69 or 73% supporting concept 2, and 7 or 7% supporting concept 1, with 19 or 20% not having a preference.

Just a reminder that the primary driver for the renewal is that the assets have reached the end of life, they are fully depreciated, the current play area is 18 years old and has non-compliance issues in relation to the current NZ Standards for playground equipment and surfacing.

We have then tried to accommodate additional requests where we can, these include:

  • Changing the swing seat configuration to allow for more seats. So we have removed the basket swing, and will have 2 infant seats, 2 belt seats, and 1 inclusive seat.
  • We have now added an accessible path with a 1:12 gradient to get to the play area.
  • Relocate the rubbish bin.
  • Confirming that the existing furniture remains on site, which will be refurbished.

There were some requests that we were not able to accommodate, largely to do with budget constraints, the layout of the site, and what we would expect for this category of play area (neighbourhood).

Examples include:

  • Adding fencing.
  • Adding a BBQ.
  • Adding a flying fox.
  • Adding a fountain.
  • Adding lighting.

We have yet to lock in the construction dates, but the expectation is that we will be targeting a dry weather build.
