How many on-street mobility parking spaces are there in Wellington City?

There are currently 60 on-street mobility parking spaces in the central city area that are managed by the Council. This is approximately 2% of the total on-street metered parking spaces in the central city area[1]. Plus another 129 Council mobility parking spaces across the city, either on the street or at Wellington City Council venues. 

There are additional off-street mobility parking spaces across the Wellington City area that are managed by commercial operators.

What is the Council’s current on-street mobility parking space target?

The Mobility Parking Policy 2005 set the target for the number of Wellington City Council mobility parking spaces in the central area to 60 spaces by 2009.


What factors limit the provision of on-street mobility parking spaces in Wellington City?

The Council provides mobility parking where it is safe and feasible to do so. This isn't always possible in some places due to the terrain and topography; the heritage characteristics, and/or the width, slope or camber of the roads.

Why are the mobility parking permit concessions different across the country/region?

Every Council will manage and prioritise its parking supply differently and have different time restrictions, charges and reserved parking. The demand for mobility parking will differ across the country too. It would be very difficult to try and harmonise the concessions across the country. 

Is there an international good practice for the provision of mobility parking spaces?

Other countries have developed their own standards for the design of mobility parking spaces.

Which guidelines or Standards inform the design and specification for the Council’s on-street mobility parking spaces?

As there is no NZ Standard for on-street mobility parking spaces, Design requirements have been directed by those for off-street spaces in NZS 4121:2001. The specification does not take in to account any variations on standard parking dimensions such as rear-mounted hoists. The minimum length requirement in NZS 4121:2001 is at least 5 m; however, WCC good practice is 6m, which fits in with the NZTA Traffic Control Devices Manual Part 13 Parking Control guidance.
