Grenada North Park upgrade

Share your thoughts on the draft concept plan for Grenada North Park.

What's happening?

We're developing a plan for Grenada North Park to upgrade its open spaces and to address the growing need for sport and recreation facilities around the city.

Together with Wellington engineering firm WSP and the sport and community groups that use the park, we’ve developed a draft concept plan and are seeking your feedback on what is proposed.

Options for the upgrade include:

  • new artificial sportsfield
  • refurbishment of other fields
  • entrance upgrades
  • playground renewal
  • walking and biking tracks
  • furniture and other amenities.

Project priorities

Plans to upgrade Grenada North Park have been in the making since 2011, when a masterplan was first developed.

The goal is to create an attractive, functional and well-utilised sports and recreation park which caters for the growth in the northern suburbs and provides a multi-use park for the wider Wellington region.

Informed by Te Whai Oranga Pōneke – Open Space and Recreation Strategy, we are considering how the park may contribute to our strategic focus areas:

  • Integrated – multi-functional park that may positively contribute to the everyday lives of locals.
  • Inclusive – accessible spaces that make everyone feel safe and welcome.
  • Regenerating & Resilient – supports a flourishing natural environment and increases the resilience of our sportsfields for year-round use in all types of weather.
  • Re-indigenising – embed Māori knowledge
  • Diverse – deliver variety by creating quality spaces for informal recreation, alongside traditional sports fields.

We want to hear from you!

As this project progresses, we are seeking your input to help shape the concept plans for the park. Come along to a drop-in session, ask us a question or complete the survey below and have your say before 5pm, Friday 5 July 2024.

What happens next...

After the survey closes the project team will collate and analyse results, then combine them with feedback received from other engagements about the park's future. This will inform the development of a final concept which will be published on our Let’s Talk page.

Developed design, detailed design and procurement for construction is scheduled to be completed in the next 12 months (2024/25) following approval of the Business Case – future engagement dates are still to be confirmed.

Funding for construction is allocated over two years: 2025/26 & 2026/27 (subject to developed, detailed design construction procurement).

  • We’ve been working with regional sport organisations and community groups on a draft concept for upgrading the sportsfields, but the park is used in many other ways so we’d like to hear from you too.
