Churton Park Play Area design update

12 July 2024

Kia ora koutou,

Thank you for your patience as we worked towards a final design for the Churton Park play area, based on the predominant themes that came through public consultation. Concept one was the overwhelming favourite between the two designs presented. You can view the final concept design here.

95% of submitters supported the renewal, with 5% questioning or opposing it. The primary driver for the renewal is that the assets have reached the end of life, they are fully depreciated, the current play area is 20 years old and has non-compliance issues on different pieces of equipment and the safety surfaces, in relation to the current NZ Standards for playground equipment and surfacing.

We have then tried to accommodate additional requests where we can, these include:

  • Investigating the installation of a fountain at the pavilion.
  • Adding more drainage.
  • Adding more swing seats and the necessary surfacing to facilitate this. The new configuration will include: a basket swing, 3 belt seats, an inclusive seat that can be used by anyone with any ability, an infant seat and an expression seat (where an older and younger user can swing together).
  • Adding climbing grips to the support posts of the monkey bars, to assist younger/smaller users.
  • Confirming that there are 2 shade sails in scope for the project.

There were some requests that we were not able to accommodate, largely to do with budget constraints and the layout of the site.

Examples include:

  • Adding a BBQ
  • Fencing in the site.
  • Adding a dual seat flying fox.
  • Adding a bike track.
  • Adding a splash pad.
  • Outdoor fitness machines for adults.

We have yet to lock in the construction dates, but the expectation is that as the site has drainage issues, we will be targeting a dry weather build.
