Box Hill and Station Rd Intersection safety improvement
In September 2019, Wellington City Council received a 129 signatured e-petition expressing safety concerns for people who use the Box Hill/ Burma Road/Station Road/Baroda Street intersection in Khandallah.
To gain a better understanding of the problems and concerns of the intersection, an anonymous survey and a Traffic Survey were carried out in August 2020. Problems of this intersection have been confirmed as below:
User confusion, complex layout and high demand are resulting in an unsafe environment for users;
High vehicle speed reduces safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists; and
Traffic congestion at the intersection is causing delays and resulting in frustration and unsafe manoeuvres.
The proposed safety improvements include:
Building upon the collaboration with the community and local business, and the commitment to safety improvements, the Council are proposing the following changes:
- Implementing traffic light controls at the intersection to manage traffic flow, prioritise the crossing of pedestrians and cyclists, and enhance safety for all road users.
- Adding 'No Stopping' restrictions on all approaches to the intersection to improve visibility for all road users.
- Time-restricted parking spaces to optimise parking availability and traffic movement, as well as balance the need for access to local businesses.
- Relocating Bus Stop #4459 for improved public transport efficiency and safety.
